my #asianreadathon tbr!

So, two days ago I was bored on twitter and saw the #asianreadathon and thought: what a great idea! I'm Asian! And trying to read more books by Asian authors! But then I remembered all the other readathons I miserably failed and hesitated. However, I'm stuck at home for another month with barely anything to do, so WE'RE ON BABY.

Here's my (really small) TBR:

1. Read any book by an Asian author.
2. Read a book featuring an Asian character or written by an Asian author who you can relate to.

  • Ex: If you’re an immigrant you can read about an immigrant character; if you’re a woman you can read a book by another woman; etc.

I chose WICKED AS YOU WISH by Rin Chupeco because there's a queer main character and is written by an Asian author! And also because I've been meaning to read some of Rin Chupeco's books for a long time.

WICKED AS YOU WISH
by Rin Chupeco.
“A great read for fans of fairy tales, myths and legends… Come for the adventure, stay for the sassy jerkwad firebird.” —Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series
When a hidden prince, a girl with secrets, a ragtag group of unlikely heroes, and a legendary firebird come together…something wicked is going down.
Many years ago, the magical Kingdom of Avalon was left encased in ice when the Snow Queen waged war. Its former citizens are now refugees in a world mostly devoid of magic. Which is why the crown prince and his protectors are stuck in…Arizona.
Prince Alexei, the sole survivor of the Avalon royal family, is hiding in a town so boring, magic doesn’t even work there. Few know his secret identity, but his friend Tala is one of them.
A new hope for their abandoned homeland reignites when a famous creature of legend, the Firebird, appears for the first time in decades. Alex and Tala must unite with a ragtag group of new friends to journey back to Avalon for a showdown that will change the world as they know it".

3. Read a book featuring an Asian character or written by an Asian author who is different from you.
  • Ex: If you’re straight you can read about a queer character; if you’re Japanese you can read a book by a Vietnamese author; etc.
4. Read a book recommended by an Asian.
  • Ex: Watch an Asian booktuber’s recommendations video; find books recommended by an Asian blogger; ask your Asian friend what book best represents them; have an Asian friend choose between 2 books on your TBR; etc.

I chose OF CURSES AND KISSES by Sandhya Menon because it's from an Indian American author (and I'm Japanese-Brazilian) and because it was a recommendation from Ikram (from READLOGY)

OF CURSES AND KISSES
by Sandhya Menon
The first novel in a series set at an elite international boarding school, that’s a contemporary spin on Beauty and the Beast.
Will the princess save the beast?
For Princess Jaya Rao, nothing is more important than family. When the loathsome Emerson clan steps up their centuries-old feud to target Jaya’s little sister, nothing will keep Jaya from exacting her revenge. Then Jaya finds out she’ll be attending the same elite boarding school as Grey Emerson, and it feels like the opportunity of a lifetime. She knows what she must do: Make Grey fall in love with her and break his heart. But much to Jaya’s annoyance, Grey’s brooding demeanor and lupine blue eyes have drawn her in. There’s simply no way she and her sworn enemy could find their fairy-tale ending…right?
His Lordship Grey Emerson is a misanthrope. Thanks to an ancient curse by a Rao matriarch, Grey knows he’s doomed once he turns eighteen. Sequestered away in the mountains at St. Rosetta’s International Academy, he’s lived an isolated existence—until Jaya Rao bursts into his life, but he can't shake the feeling that she’s hiding something. Something that might just have to do with the rose-shaped ruby pendant around her neck…
As the stars conspire to keep them apart, Jaya and Grey grapple with questions of love, loyalty, and whether it’s possible to write your own happy ending.

The readathon will be from May 1 to 31, 2020 (the Asian Heritage Month in the USA) and I'll be reading these two books. The reason I only chose two? Because I refuse to fail this time!

I'll also be reviewing these books as I read them and talking about them on twitter as well.
